Metal Polishing Wheel & Compound Guide
Not sure which buffing wheel, polishing compound or grinder speed to use? This guide explains the combinations we use for cutting, refining and finishing aluminium and stainless steel.
Read this first: not every job needs every stage. Start at the mildest combination that will actually do the work in front of you. Badly oxidised or freshly sanded metal earns a heavy cut; a tank that has been looked after may only need a colour and a finish.

The four wheels

Heavy cut
The firmest wheel. Cuts hardest. For heavy oxidation, marks and sanding scratches.

Our Polishing Starter Kit gives you a simple three-stage system for cutting, colouring and finishing metal. Start at the stage your metal requires—you do not need to complete every stage on every job.
What is in the kit
- 1 × 10″ red heavy-cut polishing wheel
- 1 × 10″ untreated polishing wheel
- 1 × 10″ flannel finishing wheel
- 1 × Menzerna 439T compound bar
- 1 × Menzerna 480BLF finishing bar
- 1 × 3″ safety flange
- 1 × buffing-wheel rake

Red heavy-cut wheel + Menzerna 439T
Approx. starting speed 3,500 RPMFor the initial cutting stage on heavily oxidised, marked, or properly prepared and sanded metal.

Untreated white wheel + Menzerna 439T
Approx. starting speed 3,500 RPMThe softer untreated wheel makes 439T behave less aggressively. This is the colouring stage — it lifts the marks left by the red heavy-cut wheel and brings up the lustre.

Soft white flannel wheel + Menzerna 480BLF
Approx. starting speed 1,800 RPMLight pressure only. This is the finishing stage, bringing the metal up to a high-gloss shine.
The same 439T bar is used in Stage 1 and Stage 2. Load it onto the red heavy-cut wheel to cut, then onto the untreated wheel to colour. Both of those wheels stay dedicated to 439T for life — one bar across two wheels, never two different bars on the one wheel.
Where to start
Work through all three stages, starting at Stage 1.
Begin at Stage 2 — untreated wheel with 439T — then finish at Stage 3.
Stage 3 alone is usually enough — flannel wheel with 480BLF.
What runs on what
An important distinction. The cards below show which compounds each wheel type can run. They do not mean you should put several compounds through the same physical wheel. Every individual wheel you own should be dedicated to one bar for its whole life — if you want untreated cotton with both P14F and 480BLF, that is two wheels.

Why the same bar behaves differently
This is the part most people miss. A compound does not have one fixed aggression — the wheel underneath it decides how hard it works. The firmer the wheel, the harder the same bar cuts.

More refining action — lifts haze, builds clarity

Technique

Let the wheel do the work
Overlapping passes, moderate pressure. Forcing it builds heat and marks rather than cutting faster.

Mount it properly
Matched safety flange every time — 3″ for 10″ wheels, 2″ for 6″. Shop flanges

Keep a rake handy
Rake new wheels before first use, and again whenever they load up with compound. Shop rake

Apply lightly, apply often
Little and often beats loading it up. Excess compound builds up and kills performance.

What too much looks like
Caked and glazed. At this point it smears instead of cutting — rake it back.

Practical notes
Rake new wheels first
Dress a new wheel before its first use, and again whenever it loads up with compound.
One compound per wheel, for life
Never apply a different compound to a wheel that has already been used. Label them if you have to.
Apply lightly and regularly
Loading excessive compound onto the wheel creates build-up and reduces performance.
Start mild
Work from the least aggressive combination capable of producing the result you need. Not every job requires every stage.
Speeds are starting points
The figures here are practical starting points, not absolute settings.
Conditions change the answer
Metal condition, previous sanding, wheel diameter and your own technique all affect the ideal speed and combination.
Safety
- Never exceed the maximum RPM rating of the buffing wheel, safety flange, arbor or machine — whichever is lowest.
- Wear suitable eye, hearing and respiratory protection.
- Securely mount all wheels and flanges before use, and check them before every session.
